Homeland Security & Emergency Management

Chair: Debbie Briedwell, GIS Specialist, Missouri Department of Public Safety

Timely, accurate information is fundamental to the decision making capability of those tasked with the homeland security mission. This data must be easily accessed and capable of being shared across jurisdictions and users. Spatial technology provides an excellent infrastructure to support many emergency response and homeland security initiatives. These technologies can provide decision-makers the data they need to confidently confront a wide variety of threats including natural disasters, terrorist attacks, sabotage, and similar crises.

The development, use, and maintenance of geospatial information and technologies across a statewide enterprise are critical components of the State Homeland Security Plan. Implementation of this geospatial strategy fosters more effective access to geospatial information maintained statewide by municipalities, counties, state, and federal agencies. This strategy complements federal homeland security and geospatial programs of the Department of Homeland Security, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, and the USGS National Geospatial Programs Office.

USNG: In order to effectively communicate location information in a common language, the MGISAC has endorsed the use of the United States National Grid (USNG) as a standardized reference system during emergencies. More information on the USNG can be found at Delta State University.

ARCHER: Airborne Real time Cueing Hyperspectral Enhanced Reconnaissance, provided by the Civil Air Patrol. Read more about ARCHER on the Date Development page.
